Abstract: Teochew commerce is one of the most important Chinese commerces in the world, with the reputation of “five centuries of enduring success.” This seminar uses the theme “三江出海，一纸还乡” as a narrative thread to trace the evolution of Teochew merchants. Through in-depth interviews, it shares stories of overseas Chinese merchants, compares the experiences of different business guilds, summarizes the secrets of Teochew merchants’ success, and explores the similarities and differences between Teochew merchants and Jewish merchants.
Bio: Prof. Long Denggao is Director of the Center for Chinese Entrepreneur Studies at Tsinghua University, Changjiang Distinguished Professor of the Ministry of Education, winner of the Sun Yefang Economic Science Award, and Chief Expert of Major Projects of the National Social Science Fund of China and Major Special Projects of the Ministry of Education. He has been a visiting professor at Harvard, Cambridge, Yale, Oxford, and Nanyang Technological University. His publications include Exploring the Management and Operations of Overseas Chinese Entrepreneurs, Transcending Market Barriers, and Two Thousand Years of Market China. He has been a guest speaker at CCTV’s Lecture Room, the Wenjin Lecture Hall of the National Library of China, and the Boao Forum.
